Capoeira

What happens in a capoeira course?

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian martial art form that combines movement, music, play and community. A capoeira class is not only physically enriching, but also mentally enriching: it develops strength, flexibility and balance, while also giving you joy, fun and self-confidence. A typical capoeira class starts with a warm-up, followed by basic movements (such as the ginga, the basic stance of capoeira), kicks, lunges, acrobatic elements and pair exercises. These not only strengthen the body but also improve coordination and reaction time.

Besides the physical part, music plays a very important role. Students are introduced to traditional capoeira instruments such as the berimbau (bow-shaped stringed instrument), pandeiro (tambourine), atabaque (drum) and agogô (metal bell). Practising singing and rhythm together deepens respect for the culture and helps to build cohesion within the team.

A special feature of capoeira is that it is a playful form of combat: in a circle called a roda, participants move, fight and communicate with each other improvisationally to music, without using real violence. It is this playfulness, cooperation and creativity that makes capoeira particularly appealing to people of all ages.

So capoeira is not just training - it is a living culture, community, music, rhythm and joy. During a course, participants not only move and develop, but also get in touch with a rich Afro-Brazilian tradition, while having fun and making new friends.

Who am I and why capoeira?

My name is Contramestra Pimenta, I'm from Brazil and capoeira has been part of my life since I was a child. I have dedicated my whole life to this unique Afro-Brazilian martial art and culture - not only as a practitioner, but also as a teacher, researcher and cultural mediator. I have been living and teaching in Hungary for more than 24 years, where I build community through capoeira and bring the rich world of Brazilian culture closer to the people. I hold a PhD in capoeira and the study of Brazilian culture and am one of the highest ranked female capoeiraists internationally. In my classes, movement, music, play and joy are all present at the same time. For me, capoeira is not only a martial art, but a way of life - freedom, self-expression and community.

Classes are open to all ages and backgrounds - beginners or advanced, children or adults. Movement, rhythm, music, community - all in one place, in a good atmosphere, in a special space.
