Mistakes came back to haunt us – ELTE BEAC Kosárlabda

Mistakes came back to haunt us

We played a balanced game against Vasas Akadémia for three quarters then in the first two minutes of the last quarter the home team practically decided the game

Success would have been important to both teams tonight, so it is no surprise that both teams came with a full lineup.  Our returning center, Judie Barnai started scoring in the game in which the play in the first quarter crumbled under the high stakes.  Both teams paid attention to defense while there were many mistakes on offense since the start.  Our centers were alive and out of the 14 points in the first quarter, 12 were scored by the Judie-Trixi due.  The first quarter closed with an equal score (14-14).

The back-and-forth game continued in the beginning of the second quarter then Bach hit an unsportsmanlike foul, then after a nice play by Geri Ivanova and Trixi Mérész, we had a bigger lead for the first time at 19-24.  The game became tougher, the number of fouls increased and both teams complained.  Berta Boros dished some nice assists to our centers then after 21-28, the game turned into a free throw derby.  Both teams were collecting fouls; on our side four players had 3 fouls at halftime.  Unfortunately, we did not do well with our free throw shooting and even though Vasas also missed some as well, they missed less than us and at the end of the half, Julcsi Boros scored after a long while closing the quarter with a one-point lead (32-33).

Beatrix Mérész carried the team in the beginning of the second half and we managed to get away with her three baskets and six points (33-39).  We could not get away further and Vasas were beating us underneath the baskets, and we also were missing our outside shooting.  Unfortunately, our free throw game did not improve after the break and Eszter Madár caught the ropes on the other side which allowed the home team to turn the game around and lead by four points (48-44).  A basket and one by Judie Barnai brought us back to one point before the last quarter (48-47).

The last quarter did not start well for us.  Papp scored two triples in 45 seconds prompting a timeout for us. Unfortunately, the home team scored another four points, and this meant a double-digit lead for the first time in the game (58-47).  We kept trying but our outside shots were not falling in and due to a unique referee attitude, we kept losing our centers – Geri Ivanova, Berta Boros and Julcsi Boros all left the court.  Vasas practically decided this game in the first two minutes of the last period, and we had no chance to close this gap.  We can only hope that we are over this poor shooting form with this game and as painful as this loss is we have no time to lick our wounds because the fight for the Play-Off is not yet over!
