Even though Győr won easily, we led in the first half with a team without centers
We awaited the tipoff with only nine people in a postponed game against Győr, with a heavily reserve lineup, mainly made of forwards and Hungarians. On the other side, Razheva was missing who was playing in a qualifying tournament for the world championship but otherwise the guests arrived with a vengeance and full lineup.
Considering these, the halftime score of 35-32, seemed magical. Also incredible is the fact that Győr was only in the lead at 8-9, and from then on, we lead during the whole first half. In the first quarter, after the free throws of Tímea Czank, we had the biggest lead at 18-12, and it was too bad that Julcsi Boros’ layup at the end of the quarter came off the rim while Oroszova scored a triple, for the end of the quarter score of 18-17.
The points of Julcsi Boros at the beginning of the second quarter meant that we could push back the guest attempts to inch closer. We fought hard and following a triple by Tímea Czank in the 15th minute, we lead by ten points (33-23)! Our team captain was a true leader, but we can honestly say that everyone who played left their heart on the floor. Unfortunately, Tímea Czank was forced to the bench after hitting her third foul and our dip in energy was used well by Győr who came back to three points before halftime. But we were in the lead and not many people would have believed this at the tipoff!
While Angéla Juhász made a nice shot over Mompremier at the beginning of the second half, we stayed in the locker room. Győr turned the game around in 3 minutes and had a 4-point lead (37-41) prompting Bubu Balogh for a timeout. As could be expected, Győr took the lead with its high energy and forcing the inside game. After 42-49, we were able to come back to two (49-51), while the bench and fans were busy being upset about some incredible referee calls. The end of the quarter saw another push from the green team who scored 27 points in 10 minutes and had a ten-point lead before the last period (49-59) while we lost Zsófi Orosz from our short rotation.
We became tired in the physical game and Győr took advantage of this without a heartbeat. They had more kilograms and centimeters and number of players in this game. Our Hungarian team made of only forwards and guards fought hard, but it was clear that they had no chance, so the guest team ended up meeting the expectations. Even though the end was 21 points – we won by 22 in the away game 😊 – , there is nothing to be ashamed of because we played well with nine players, without our centers and we did not give this to Győr easily.
We are playing Szekszárd in the semi finals of the Hungarian Cup next week then the closure of the regular season follows.
