Our team has official opened the pre-season for the 2017-18 championship season Monday night. Out of the 16 players, 14 reported for the first practice led by 13th-year Head Coach Judit Balogh who was assisted by new Assistant Coach Anna Vajda.
After the amateur championship closure in May, the players had an active summer. Out of the 16 players of the extended team, eight played on various National Teams during the summer. Altogether, the BEAC players represented the country in ten different locations of the world and collected a world championship silver medal, an U23 National League win, a European Championship fifth place, a world championship ninth place and a World University Games tenth place. Two players from the team, Judit Barnai and Ágota Gocsman are still playing in the World University Games in Taiwan. They will join the team next week.
Besides these two players, everyone was present at the first practice including the old BEAC players in uniforms, our old-new point guard Sára Pusztai, Nikolett Angyal who won the Junior Championship with the BEAC-Csata team last year and Dóra Szabó who arrived from PINKK-Pécsi 424. We also have one new player: Vanessza Kovács on loan from Győr who can play the four. Fortunately, no one is new to one another: all three were members of the 3×3 U23 National Team with Anna Suppán coached by Krisztina Süle.
Our team closed a great year last season, grabbing ninth place in the national championship and a gold in the amateur championship as well as in the Hepp Cup – all of these adding up to a nice challenge for repeat. More important though is that all players get time on the floor and that players can be developed individually as well. Our club therefore stands behind its philosophy – that we are playing exclusively Hungarian players and mostly young ones to prove that we deserve a place among the best teams in Hungary.
‘Last year, our ninth place was above expectations, and I think that repeating this result would be an immense accomplishment. This is so, in light of the fact, that according to our sources, this year we will be the only all-Hungarian team and we have an even younger team to compete with then before. Our basic goal remains the same; that our young players can grow and develop. If this can be coupled with a result similar to last season’s or better – well, then this would be in the dream category’ – said Krisztina Süle at the start of the pre-season.
Our team will most likely visit the champion Sopron on September 29th and will look forward to difficult match ups on October 4th against Vasas Akadémia and October 7th against MTK Budapest. We plan to have some scrimmages in the next few weeks but dates and times are under negations at the moment.
